Obstetrical Services

Obstetrical Services

We believe in a holistic and individualized approach to each pregnancy. Our goal is to provide excellent care and to support women throughout pregnancy. We strive to help women achieve the birth experiences that they desire. We perform all obstetrical services and deliveries at St. David’s Medical Center (919 East 32nd Street, Austin, TX).

Preconception Counseling

The key to a healthy pregnancy often starts before conception. We work with women of all ages and stages of life to optimize their health and well-being in preparation for pregnancy. Whether there are existing medical conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, psychiatric conditions, heart conditions, inherited disorders, etc) or you would like to discuss family planning, we are happy to work with you and may offer referrals to Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialists as appropriate.

Prenatal Care

Each visit consists of monitoring fetal wellbeing and detecting fetal heart rate, monitoring maternal health, educating on what to expect during the pregnancy, and addressing any patient concerns. Patients are encouraged to select a primary provider but have the opportunity to meet all of the other providers throughout the course of their prenatal care. This way, each patient will always know the provider that assists them with their delivery as we share labor and delivery call.

Provider on Call

Our call schedule rotates every 24 hours during the week, and there is a rotating physician on-call each weekend (Friday to Sunday). As we do not share call responsibilities with any other providers outside of the practice, you can be assured that your after-hours emergency questions will always be answered by one of our physicians. Your labor and delivery will always be managed by one of our physicians. As we all adhere to the guidelines set forth by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and have the same philosophies about natural labor and minimizing unnecessary interventions, you have the peace of mind of knowing that we will provide consistent care that is respectful of your birth plans.

High-Risk Pregnancy

All of our physicians are skilled and capable of managing high-risk pregnancies. Many of our high-risk patients have a history of high-blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, neurologic conditions, twin/triplet pregnancies, preterm deliveries, recurrent miscarriages, in-vitro fertilization, etc. We are able to monitor these pregnancies through routine prenatal care, ultrasound, and may co-manage these patients with a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarian Section (VBAC)

For women who have had one prior cesarean section, we offer the opportunity for a trial of labor. We will discuss your specific likelihood for success with you as well as the risk of uterine rupture (less than 1%).

Ultrasound

All of our physicians are trained to perform and interpret fetal ultrasounds. We perform ultrasounds in the first trimester to establish dating and evaluate problems such as bleeding. We perform ultrasounds in the later trimesters as indicated to monitor fetal growth in the case of size-date discrepancies. We perform ultrasounds for amniotic fluid volume and limited fetal surveillance in the post-dates period.

We do NOT perform ultrasounds at every prenatal visit and advocate against this for the safety of the developing fetus. We believe that ultrasound should only be performed when medically indicated.

Transfer Patients

We accept patients transferring from other facilities who have had previous prenatal care and are less than 35 gestational weeks.  We require a copy of your previous medical records for review by our physicians prior to scheduling your first visit.
